Modernising scientific hardware interfaces

The Challenge

Thermal Hazard Technology (THT) design scientific calorimeters — high-precision instruments used to test the safety of chemicals and batteries under extreme conditions. While their hardware was advancing rapidly, their software hadn’t kept pace.

The existing interface was clunky, inconsistent, and seen by users as a blocker to both ease of use and product credibility. THT needed more than a UI refresh. They were looking for a scalable design foundation, something flexible enough to serve their current product line, while laying the groundwork for future tools and configurations.

We designed a reusable, platform-agnostic interface system that powers the THT product range.

Outcomes

It includes modular UI components, visual styles, and a UX playbook for critical workflows like test setup and result interpretation, all built to flex across different user needs and hardware setups.

This new system aims to improve usability, speed up development, and bring clarity and consistency to tools used in high-stakes environments. For the THT team, it means no more starting from scratch, just faster, more confident iteration, and a more cohesive user experience across the board.

Built with modularity and developer-friendliness in mind

We began with focused research to understand how scientists actually use THT’s tools, from initial setup to interpreting complex results. That insight shaped everything: interface structure, interaction logic, and key design decisions.

Every component was crafted with modularity and developer-friendliness in mind, allowing the system to flex across multiple product types and configurations.

Project Summary

Throughout, we worked closely with the THT team to ensure the design system aligned with their goals, not just in terms of usability, but also long-term maintainability. The final deliverable was a clearly documented design guide, built to support confident development and product evolution across their entire ecosystem.
