Interface design for next-gen cell & gene therapy hardware
The Challenge
MFX is developing novel hardware and consumables to make cell and gene therapy production more scalable, efficient, and precise. These therapies are complex and rely on live cells, which behave unpredictably, making automation particularly challenging.
Their ambition spans both experimentation and manufacturing: one product helps lab teams identify the right protocol, the other scales it into production. From the start, MFX knew conventional machine interfaces wouldn’t cut it — they needed something as innovative as the tools themselves.
That’s where we came in.
This ongoing partnership continues to deliver clean, accessible machine interfaces that support MFX’s ambition to reshape therapy manufacturing.
Outcomes
We’ve worked with MFX across multiple prototype cycles to design and build the interfaces for their hardware, from foundational control systems to forward-looking, investor-facing demos. The goal in every phase has been the same: to create intuitive, efficient UIs that evolve in sync with the hardware, without bloating or overcomplicating the experience.
From guided process control to real-time data visibility, each interaction is designed to give operators clarity and confidence, while keeping cognitive load low. Alongside this, we built a high-fidelity “looks-like” prototype for a major US conference, a vision-led tool that helped MFX secure industry interest while development continued.
We’ve embedded closely with the MFX team — continuously aligning with their latest hardware prototypes to prioritise high-confidence features.
This lets us avoid sinking time into UI elements tied to hardware still in flux, and ensures tight integration between control surfaces and physical functionality.
Project Summary
Each design cycle starts with collaborative planning, followed by focused UI development for novel, often unprecedented interactions. Working closely with engineers, we’ve built a system that surfaces critical data clearly, while supporting more complex tasks without overwhelming the operator.
Alongside the product work, we refreshed MFX’s visual identity, modernising the logo, refining typography, and simplifying the colour palette to improve clarity across both digital and physical applications.
